Make these fun and fragrant fall decorations to bring cheer to your autumn home.
Here’s what you’ll need to make your own:
- Cinnamon (Inexpensive is great–I bought mine at the Dollar Store.).
- Elmer’s Glue.
- Acorn Caps.
- Mixing Bowl.
- Measuring Cups.
- Waxed Paper.
- Rolling Pin.
- X-Acto Knife.
- Parchment Paper.
- Oven (optional).
- Cinnamon Oak Leaves PDF.
In your measuring bowl, mix:
1 C. Cinnamon
1/4 C. Applesauce
1/2 C. Elmer’s Glue
Stir until ingredients are thoroughly combined, and you have a firm dough.
To make acorns, roll small balls, and then flatten into egg shapes. Test your acorn caps to make sure your cinnamon acorns are the right size. This dough shrinks very little, so you don’t have to worry about the acorns shrinking and not fitting.
To make leaves, print and cut out the leaf PDF pattern. Roll your dough out between two sheets of waxed paper until it is 1/8-1/4″ thick. I actually prefer it on the thinner side near 1/8″ thick, as it stays pretty sturdy when dry.
Lay the oak leaf pattern onto the dough, and use the X-Acto knife to cut around the edge. Cut as many as you can, remove the leaves, re-roll the scraps, and cut more leaves. When I got down to the point I didn’t have enough to make more leaves, I just rolled the rest into acorns.
Place your acorns and leaves onto a parchment lined baking sheet, and let air dry 24 hours (or more, depending on humidity), flipping a couple of times to dry evenly. Or, preheat oven to 200 degrees, and bake them for 2 hours, flipping once to dry evenly.
Place your acorns and leaves into a bowl to enjoy the spicy fragrance. Mix them with potporri, surround a candle with them, make them to give to friends.
You could also poke holes into the dough items while they are wet, and then string them into a fragrant garland when they’re dry. Items made with this dough are highly fragrant, and quite sturdy. How could you use them in your fall crafting?
