It feels like fall today so I’m starting to make my holiday knitting list. I made this Christmas scarf for a nephew who requested the colors. Bored by the idea of endless inches of ribbing I came up with this Simple Cable Scarf pattern.
Materials
- Yarn (I used some merino wool from my stash since my nephew lives in the high desert of New Mexico.)
- Needles (use whatever you like to get the gauge you like)
- Yarn Needle
Gauge
Customized. Depends on the yarn you choose.
Pattern
Cast on 30 stitches
Knit four rows of garter stitch
Begin cable pattern
Cable pattern
The cable pattern consists of four rows.
Abbreviations:
4FC- slip two stitches onto cable, hold in front, k2, k2 from cable
4BC- slip two stitches onto cable, hold in back, k2, k2 from cable
First Row
(I put spaces so you can read it better.)
KK KKP 4FC PKKP 4BC PKKP 4FC PKK KK
Second Row
KK, knit the knits, purl the purls, KK
Third Row
KK, knit the knits, purl the purls, KK
Fourth Row
KK, knit the knits, purl the purls, KK
Repeat four rows until you get length you’d like.
End on first row of cable pattern so both ends will match. I didn’t do that in my scarf and though it’s not a big deal I could tell in his mom’s photos so tweaked the pattern.
I put markers on each side of the cables so I wouldn’t have to count stitches.
Fringe
Put 28 pieces of fringe on ends. Pull on knots to secure and then trim bottoms to even them up.
Color Details
Knit seven sets of the cable pattern in red, knit four sets of the cable pattern in yellow. Repeat until you get the length you desire, ending with seven sets in red.
For fringe put four fringe of red, 2 fringe of yellow alternating, ending in red.
Finishing
Weave in ends with yarn needle. Block scarf to make cables pop out. Cat is optional.
