Make a great summer boredom buster with DIY Crayon Rubbings

This is a great boredom buster activity to do with the kiddos.  Minimal supplies, fast and easy to make–these hot glue Crayon rubbing plates are sure to inspire creativity in your kids.

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own:

  • Hot Glue Gun (a trigger style gun is the easiest to use).
  • Hot Glue Sticks.
  • Cardboard.
  • Pen.
  • Scissors.
  • Crayons.
  • Paper.

Rubbing 3

First, plug in your glue gun to heat.

While it’s heating, cut your cardboard into small pieces.  Help the kids draw simple pictures, or patterns onto the pieces of cardboard.  Try writing words, make swirls, flowers, shapes, and even just large patterns.

When the glue gun is good and hot, begin outlining the designs with a continuous bead of glue.  This part, of course, should only be done by an adult.  Let the glue cool until totally cold.

Lay your cardboard rubbing plate under a sheet of paper, and rub a peeled crayon across the surface of it to reveal the picture.

Larger designs show up better than small details, and are easier to outline with the hot glue in the first place.

Even simple patterns can add fun texture to the backgrounds of pictures the kids draw.  Try making waves, leaves, clouds, grass, etc.

I think it would be fun to make a  basic outline of a person, face, animal, building, etc., and then have the kids fill in the rubbings they make with different drawn details to customize them.

These fun rubbing plates are a great simple activity that can inspire endless creativity in your kids.

Happy crafting!
