DIY Pinwheel Wreath

Get out the paper and scissors and make your own pinwheel wreath that’s as sweet as a summer breeze!

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own:

  • A piece of cardboard.
  • Brown paper grocery bags.
  • Scrapbook paper (I like paper that is patterned on both sides).
  • Scissors.
  • Ruler.
  • Pencil.
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks.
  • Buttons.
  • Ribbon.

To begin this wreath, you’ll need to construct a Brown Paper Blank Wreath from this tutorial to build your pinwheel wreath on.

To make your pinwheels, use your ruler and pencil to make different sized squares from your scrapbook paper.  To make rosettes, cut strips of paper.

Pinwheel 4

Use your ruler and pencil and draw diagonal lines across corner-to-corner on each of your paper squares to form an “x.”

Pinwheel 5

Cut down each of the 4 lines toward the center “x,” stopping about 1/2-inch from the center.  You will then have 8 free points.  Add a small dab hot glue to the center of your “x,” and begin gently bending down every other point to the center (Add more glue as needed).  This can be slightly tricky to hold all the corners in place as you bend the others down, try using the end of a pencil to help you keep everything in place.  Now, hold the glued pieces down until the glue has had time to cool.  This may take a minute, but don’t let go, you want them stuck down good and hard.  Make all of your pinwheels.

Using your hot glue, add a dab of hot glue onto the back of your button, not directly to the pinwheel, and then push it into the center of your pinwheel.  Let the glue cool completely!!  This is super important!   Let it cool before you let up on the button, or the heat from the glue on the button will re-melt the glue that you initially used to stick the pinwheel together, and your entire pinwheel will fall apart.  Ask me how I know!  As long as you put the glue on the button, and then hold the button down to the center of the pinwheel until it is totally cool, you will be fine.

To make your paper rosettes, take one of your strips of paper and accordion fold it along the width of the strip.

Pinwheel 8

Use your hot glue to glue the ends of your folded strip together into a tube, and then press the tube down flat into a rosette.

Pinwheel 9

Cut a small circle of paper and glue it to the back of the rosette to help it hold its shape.

Pinwheel 10

Glue buttons to the center of the rosettes in the same manner that you glued them to the center of the pinwheels.

Use your hot glue to stick the pinwheels and rosettes to the wreath by adding a dab of glue to the wreath, and then sticking the pinwheel/rosette down by firmly pressing on the button centers until the glue cools.  Once again, you don’t want the heat of the new glue to re-melt the old glue and cause catastrophic pinwheel failure!  Just press down on the buttons until the glue has cooled and you’ll avoid anything falling apart.  Once you’ve stuck down everything, tie on a ribbon for decoration, and glue a small loop of ribbon on the back as a hanger.  Now find a good place to hang your cute new wreath, and think of warm summer breezes whenever you see it.
