Conversation Heart Garland

DIY Conversation Heart Garland

Decorate your home with everyone’s favorite Valentine’s Day candy this season. This garland will brighten up your mantel or doorway with fun phrases and lovely pastels! Look up some of your favorite conversation heart phrases to add to your garland, or create your own to personalize for your Valentine.

What You Need:

  • Air Dry Clay or Salt Dough
  • Rolling Pin
  • Heart Shaped Cookie Cutter
  • Letter Stamps
  • Pastel Colored Acrylic Paints
  • Baker’s Twine or Ribbon
  • Large Flat Paintbrush
  • Small Detail Paintbrush

How to Make It:

Mix up your salt dough or grab your air hardening clay, and roll it out to about 1/2 inch thick. Cut out your heart shapes until you have used most of the dough or until you have created your desired amount.

Use a circular stick (I used a chopstick) to create a hole through both sides of the heart, about 1/2 inch away from the tops and sides.

Take your stamps and gently press short Valentine phrases to create impressions into your dough. Once all of your hearts have phrases on them, bake or let dry according to instructions.

Paint your hearts with fun pastel colors. I chose pink, light blue and purple. I used a high gloss paint, which really helped the impressed letters stand out for me after I had painted the hearts.

Use a slightly darker pink (I just added a little red to the pink I used on my hearts) and your detail paintbrush to fill in the impressions you made.

Thread your baker’s twine or ribbon from front to back on the right side of the heart, then from back to front on the left. Space your hearts about 2 inches apart. Use some glue on the back side of your hearts if you’re having trouble with the hearts staying in place. Hang your new garland for your Valentine to see!
