Craft Month Scrapbook

March is Craft Month. What’s your favorite craft? I have so many to choose from, but I think my crafting started with scrapbooking. Scrapbooking is one of my favorite all time crafts. While it can be intimidating and sounds like a big commitment, it does not have to be as complex as it may appear. When I was a Maid of Honor, I gifted the bride a scrapbook which was comprised of pages made by those most important to her (family, friends, and colleagues). Fifteen years later, this is one of her most favorite keepsake items. The only rule was that each page/ sheet was on a 12×12 sheet (that’s the standard scrapbook size). I was amazed by what people made.

The various pages included:

  • Photo collages
  • Old photos
  • Recipe cards
  • Advice
  • Personalized Poems
  • Paintings/ Drawings
  • Keepsakes (movie tickets, cards, receipts)

With all of the different events coming up this Spring, you can also use this gift idea for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, your favorite graduate… it’s a great gift that only gets more and more valuable with time.

So, how and where do you start? It’s simple. Referencing a page I made for my friend’s birthday, I will guide you through some easy steps:

  1. Based on what you have available or what you’re willing to buy, you may want to start thinking of a theme (floral, color scheme, etc.)

I wanted to go with a rustic, woodsy, natural theme with a pop of red. So I used more natural colored paper. Scrapbook media options are endless.

  1. Think about what you want your main content to be and work around that centerpiece. Do you want to feature a photo, recipe card, poem, or a letter?

In this example, I want to feature a poem I wrote. For this reason, I wanted to give it attention using my corner cutter. You can also use a specialty scissor (giving it a special border) or a shaped hole puncher. Mounting and framing your content also gives it more depth, giving it more “importance” or special attention.

  1. Gather your scraps, paper stock, embellishments (think of ribbon you may have around the house, clip art you found in a magazine article, beads, glitter). If you have any specialty decorative scissors or items that can add to creating borders, depth and add layers to your piece, do that.

It’s the little details that say, “I really want you to know how important you are.” I appreciate the little details in scrapbooking. My embellishments included these miniature wooden hearts. I painted them with red nail polish and used them to give my page more color. Aren’t they cute? You can use beads, glitter, whatever you want!

Heart Buttons

I found these miniature clothes pins and not only are they adorable, they’re completely functional. They can be used to hold a photo, recipe card, or in this example, a message. I absolutely love it.

Notice how I used something as simple as baker’s twine in the background to give more color and dimension to this piece.

I like to stock up on items that can be used for other purposes as well (that’s why I think the hearts and the mini clothes pins are so versatile).

Piece it all together, and there you have it! It’s that simple.
