Watercolor Salad Plates

Serve up a cooling summer salad on a fun watercolor plate you can make in no time. These plates are just as fun to make as they are to eat off of. I was very sad when I finished all 4 of mine, I wanted to keep experimenting!

DIY Watercolor Plates

I’ve had a lot of fun experimenting with alcohol inks lately, and this fun new technique was no exception. Instead of blotting with a blending solution, I used isopropyl alcohol to spread the ink and let it drip down the sides of the plates.

What You Need:

  • Clear Glass Salad Plates
  • Alcohol Ink (I used Adirondack in Indigo and Mermaid)
  • Isopropyl Alcohol
  • Cotton Pad
  • Eye Dropper
  • Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe
  • Paint Brush

How to Make Them:

1

Thoroughly clean and dry your plates, then flip them over so the side you won’t be eating on is facing up. Take a cotton pad, put a little bit of alcohol on it and swipe it around the entire surface of the plate.

2

Add a few drops of ink to the plate and swirl it around.

3

Use your eyedropper to add a few drops of alcohol to the plate and swirl it some more. Let it drip down the sides.

4

Experiment with amounts of alcohol and ink. You can try putting a few drops of alcohol to the plate and then adding the ink on top.

5

Use multiple colors or just one. Have fun!

6

Once you like the way your plates look, allow them to dry overnight.

7

Once dry, carefully brush on a thin layer of Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge to seal. The ink may get on your brush a little bit, so be careful and deliberate with your strokes. Try to get as little Mod Podge as possible onto the parts of the plate that don’t have ink on them.

Once your Mod Podge has cured, wash the surface of the plate thoroughly to remove any ink that has gotten to the wrong side of the plate. You can use a little bit of alcohol on this side to help remove, or an alcohol ink blending solution. After a run through the dishwasher, I still have most of the ink on my plates, but am a little worried about it fading over time. For now, I’m hand washing the plates, and it seems like the Mod Podge is protecting them very well!
