Bring some spring cheer to the walls of your home by making your own wall vase to put some flowers in.
Here’s what you’ll need to make your own:
- One-Ball Mason Jar 16 oz. Pint Regular Mouth.
- DecoArt Americana Decor Chalky Finish (I used the color called “Refreshing“).
- DecoArt Americana Decor Creme Wax 4 oz. Clear.
- A wood plaque, or other piece of wood (I used an old weathered piece of cedar fence board).
- 3M Aluminum Oxide Sandpaper Fine #150.
- One- 3.5-inch Hose Clamp.
- Small Screws.
- Drill and a Small Bit (To fit whatever sized screw you’re using).
- Moore Picture Hangers Saw Tooth with Nails Large 4pc.
- White Acrylic Craft Paint.
- Plaid Paint Brush Super Value Pack All Purpose 25pc.
- Permanent Marker.
To begin, wash and dry your jar to get rid of any dust or fingerprints. With a 1-inch, soft bristle brush, apply your first layer of the chalk paint to the outside of the jar. Don’t worry if it’s a little streaky, the second coat will apply much thicker. Let dry completely. Apply a second coat of chalk paint, and let dry completely.
Using a small piece of sandpaper, lightly sand (in a circular motion) the raised text and designs on the jar to remove the paint and make them stand out. Distress any other edges of the jar you desire. Brush off the paint dust, and then, using the 1-inch soft bristle brush, apply a layer of wax over the paint. Let dry, according to the package, and apply a second coat, if desired.
Place the hose clamp around the neck of the mason jar, and screw the clamp shut so it is fastened securely. Hold the clamped jar up to your piece of wood so it is positioned like you want it to hang. Make a mark on the hose clamp with the marker where your screw needs to go on the clamp. Unscrew the hose clamp, take it off the jar, and continue unscrewing it so it is open all the way (the ends are totally free). Use your drill to make a hole in the metal clamp where you marked. Attach the clamp to the wood with a screw.
Attach the dry jar to the clamp.
Attach a picture hanger to the back of your wood.
Using your white paint, paint a decoration on the wood above the jar. I decided to paint a mandala-type design, you could choose to just make a stripes, or chevrons, or how about a word like “welcome,” “love,” or “home.” Anything you think is pretty!
How pretty would it be to make a whole bunch of different colored chalk-painted jars to use on the table to display flowers? I foresee a project in my near future!
Any way you choose to display them, chalk painted mason jars add a pretty pop of color to your home, and this wall vase full of flowers is sure to bring some cheer to your walls.
